Biography
Joel Rännäri (b. 2001) lives and works between Amsterdam (NL) and Helsinki (FI). Rännäri is an artist-philosopher whose practice is grounded in a post-disciplinary approach that challenges the arbitrary binary of theory and praxis.
Urgency, high stakes and criticality are constants in Rännäri’s practice, which takes form through philosophical inquiries, affective art objects, and whimsical yet serious performances. Drawn toward hyper-complexities, Rännäri’s practice repeatedly engages with disasters, self-consuming engines, catastrophic landscapes, and artworks made out of the metabolic waste of art-making itself. Production and consumption emerge as symbiotic forces caught in a self-enforcing feedback loop.
Rännäri understands art as a propagandistic practice of designing experiences and manipulating situations, as well as a sophisticated technology for investigating the dispositif. Rännäri’s practice appears as ‘post-medium,’ although writing – as a way of formalizing chaos – remains a constant method.
Rännäri completed his studies at Aalto University with the Master’s thesis Landfill Metaphysics, an inquiry into the culturally oriented metaphysics of consumer capitalism. The research was accompanied by a solo exhibition of the same name in spring 2025. Rännäri’s art has been exhibited in COPIUM (2025), a contemporary art survey of Aalto alumni, alongside other exhibitions, performances, and interventions.
From autumn 2026, Rännäri engages in the Dirty Art Department Master’s program at the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam.
