Biography
Joel Rännäri (b. 2001), works and lives between Amsterdam (NL) and Helsinki (FI). Rännäri is a post-disciplinary artist-philosopher, whose practice is often underlined by process-oriented approach to both doing and thinking.
With an academic background in consumer culture theory, Rännäri’s art reflects the forces of consumption in various manifestations – whether through self-consuming anatomic engines, artworks born from the metabolic waste of art-making, landscapes collapsing under their own contradictions, or tumors and metastases spreading across inhabited spaces.
Rännäri is finishing his studies in Aalto University with a master’s thesis, Landfill Metaphysics, an inquiry into the metaphorical metaphysics of consumer culture. The thesis was accompanied by a solo exhibition of the same name in spring 2025.
Currently, Rännäri is studying in the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (NL).
