Biography

Joel Rännäri (b. 2001) lives and works between Amsterdam (NL) and Helsinki (FI). Rännäri is an artist-philosopher-economist-metaphysician whose practice is underlined by a process-oriented approach to both doing and thinking – and everything in between and outside this arbitrary binary.

With an academic background in consumer culture theory, Rännäri’s art often reflects the forces of consumption in their various manifestations. Constructions such as self-consuming anatomic engines, landscapes collapsing under their own contradictions, and colonial tumors spreading across inhabited spaces are produced from the metabolic waste of art-making itself. In Rännäri’s practice, production and consumption appear only in a symbiotic relationship.

Rännäri is completing his studies at Aalto University with a master’s thesis titled Landfill Metaphysics, an inquiry into the metaphorical metaphysics of consumer culture. The thesis was accompanied by a solo exhibition of the same name in spring 2025. Rännäri’s art has also been exhibited in COPIUM (2025), a contemporary art survey of Aalto alumni, among other exhibitions and performances that sometimes fall into the category of intervention.

Currently, Rännäri is developing his practice at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (NL).
